Creamy Pumpkin Spice Latte (with Real Pumpkin)
Enjoy this deliciously creamy pumpkin spice latte at home. Made with your favourite milk, pumpkin butter, vanilla and coffee, all topped off with maple whipped cream and cinnamon. It’s autumn goodness in a mug!
Happy October! I’m really not sure where last month went. You? When I look outside, the signs of autumn are all around, but it’s still hard to believe we’re in pumpkin season already.
Have you enjoyed a pumpkin spice latte yet? I’m usually not a fan of the versions found at most coffee shops. For starters, they’re much too sweet. As well, I often find they taste a bit artificial with not much pumpkin flavour.
Instead of forgoing pumpkin spice lattes altogether, I decided to come up with my own recipe using real ingredients including the homemade pumpkin butter I shared earlier this week.
Homemade Latte Perks
Once you’ve gathered the ingredients and supplies you need to make these lattes, they’ll come together rather quickly. I like to think of the money I save making my own PSL at home. It doesn’t take long for drive thru lattes to add up, especially when we go as a family!
Plus, there’s no up-charge for dairy-free milk, extra shots or other modifications.
At home, you can customize as much as you want. Tweak this recipe to be stronger in pumpkin spice flavour, less sweet, more coffee or whip-free. Anything goes!
Although, I do recommend at least a tiny bit of whipped cream on top with a sprinkle of cinnamon. So creamy and delicious!
Get a Latte Mug
Do you prefer drinking your latte out of a gorgeous mug too? I find those paper cups and plastic lids so wasteful. And, mixing hot liquids with plastic is never a good idea.
These large mugs are a bit smaller than the grande size at Starbucks. If you find that’s just too much, this recipe can be divided into 3 servings instead.
When it’s cool outside, I enjoy wrapping my hands around a nice big mug while I sip away. There’s something so comforting about a hot pumpkin spice latte on a chilly autumn day.
On the go? You can also find gorgeous ceramic travel mugs. I enjoy the look and feel so much better than standard (see sources below).

How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Home
Kitchen Supplies
- coffee maker or espresso machine
- Milk Cafe (or saucepan, whisk and handheld milk frother)
- mixing bowl
- electric or handheld beater
- spoon
- 2 large mugs (similar)
Ingredients
- strongly brewed coffee or espresso
- milk (2% or whole, coconut, oat or combination)
- homemade pumpkin butter (or good quality store-bought)
- vanilla
- whipping cream and maple syrup
- cinnamon
The full list of ingredient measurements and instructions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Homemade Latte Directions
Start by making the strongly brewed coffee or espresso.
To a Milk Cafe fitted with latte disk, add milk and set heat to 150-160°F. Heat until warm (about 1 minute), then add pumpkin butter and vanilla through measuring cap opening while mixing. Place cap back on and allow to finish heating. (For saucepan method, see recipe notes.)
Meanwhile, whip cream until soft peaks form. Add maple syrup and continue whipping until light and fluffy.
Divide coffee between 2 mugs, followed by the frothed pumpkin milk. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle of cinnamon.
Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe Tips
- For the saucepan method, whisk together milk, pumpkin butter and vanilla over medium heat. Once the mixture is steaming hot, remove. Using a handheld milk frother, mix until frothy.
- Use any combination of milk you prefer to make up the 2 cups. Lower fat usually results in less frothing. I used coconut milk and 2%, which came out creamy and frothy. Oat milk would be delicious too.
- Adjust sweetness of latte by cutting back or adding more pumpkin butter or maple syrup.
- This recipe makes 2 large lattes (grande size) or 3 small.
- To make a pumpkin spice steamer instead, omit coffee.
