Handmade Christmas Ornaments

If you’re in the holiday spirit like I am (perhaps it’s the TV Christmas movies I’ve been binge watching lately), and have been searching for a few handmade ornaments to tackle this season, you’re definitely in the right place.

After you learn how to make these simple and easy mini bottle ornaments, I encourage you to check out the other DIY Christmas tree decor ideas from some of my blogger friends (links are at the bottom of the post). A big thank you to Krista from The Happy Housie for bringing us all together. So fun!

Once you gather up your supplies for these bottle brush Christmas tree decorations, you’ll have them assembled in no time. I mean, who has time for complicated projects this time of year anyway?

I plan on making more to hand out as gifts and possibly decorate our Christmas table. They look so pretty alongside the bottle brush trees I decorated our mantel with last year.

Don’t you think they’d look sweet with names or words printed onto ribbon to adorn the top? Iron-on transfer paper like I used for my vintage gift tags would work well. They’d make great holiday party favours too!

I’m certain you’ll see many of these cloche-inspired ornaments in my upcoming Christmas home tour. Stay tuned! Be sure to check out last year’s white Christmas decor if you missed it.

Ornament Supplies

Additional Tools

  • Tweezers
  • Scissors
  • Small Bowl and Spoon
  • Small Funnel or Handmade Paper Funnel

Note- Make sure the trees are small enough to easily fit through the opening of the glass bottle (adjust size according to the size of bottle you select). I used regular epsom salt and ran it through my mini food processor to make it less coarse.

Ornament Instructions

  1. Remove cork from top of glass bottle. Add a drop of glue to the bottom of a tree and gently push into bottle using tweezers to grip the top. Affix to the centre bottom pressing down firmly, and allow a few minutes to set up. Repeat for each bottle.
  2. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix epsom salt with glitter to make it sparkly. The ratio is based on personal preference, but as a guideline, use 1 tsp. glitter for every ¼ cup salt.
  3. Using a small funnel (or small paper funnel), add about ½” glitter to bottom of glass jar. Tap so it settles.
  4. Insert screw eye into top of cork lid, twisting carefully in a clockwise direction. Brush any debris away from cork.
  5. Add a few small dabs of glue to inside rim of glass bottle and press cork in place. Allow to set up.
  6. Finally, loop a piece of string through the eye and tie ends together to form a knot.

Bottle Ornament Variations

Of course, you can play around with a variety of mini tree colours. I think pink would be so beautiful, or maybe a metallic. I also thought about adding glitter or small beads to the top of the cork. There are so many ways to dress them up.

Filling the bottles with mini woodland creatures is another idea, as well as any tiny vintage items you may have on hand. Put your own creative spin on them.

How to Store These Christmas Ornaments

To keep the bottles looking like the day you made them, wrap each in a bit of tissue paper and place upright in a small box or container. Be sure the ornaments fit snuggly against each other so they don’t tip over. This will ensure the “snow” stays at the bottom and the bottles won’t become cloudy at the top.

Each year, you may want to wipe them with a soft cloth so they sparkle when you place them on the Christmas tree.
