Project Powder Room: The Plan

It’s time to update our boring powder room. Take a look at our plans to take it from builder-basic to beautiful!

Hello All! If you follow me on Instagram, then you know we’ve begun the next phase of our main floor renovation, the powder room. No, the living room isn’t finished yet, but we need get the other rooms to a certain point in order for the flooring to be installed all at once. Saying it’s a bit of a mess around here is an understatement!

I always suggest having at least a basic plan in place before starting any renovation project. That way you can determine the best order of steps to take and estimate how much it’s all going to cost you in the end. I have tips and tricks for keeping it all on track (or as close as possible) that I’ll share in an upcoming post.

Powder Room Inspiration

Before I get to the outline of what we’re going to do, let’s take a look at a couple pretty powder rooms for inspiration, shall we?

As you can see, I’m heading in the direction of installing wallpaper, plus a little more colour.

Our Current Powder Room

Now, get ready to be UNinspired with these before pictures of our powder room!

Basic Powder Room Before

As you can see, it’s very basic. We haven’t updated this space whatsoever since we moved.

Everything is builder-basic, from the mirror, to the towel bar, to the linoleum flooring.

There’s even a popcorn ceiling!

Don’t you just love the circa 1980 vanity light fixture, orange trim… I could go on.

How have we lived with this boring bland space for so long? Well, other spaces like our basement family room took precedence.

So, where are we going with this? I want to keep the design details a surprise for now, but I promise to share update posts week by week until it’s all done.

General Powder Room To-do List:

  • Scrape popcorn ceiling
  • Remove mirror, towel bar and toilet paper holder
  • Remove current baseboard and door trim
  • Install crown moulding
  • Install tile floor
  • Install paneling and baseboards
  • Fill, prime and paint woodwork, walls and ceiling
  • Replace light fixture
  • Replace mirror
  • Replace towel bar and toilet paper holder
  • Add decorative details (*including a secret project)

As you can see, we’re basically starting with a shell of a room, plus pedestal sink and toilet. Without giving away too much, you will see some colour and pattern in the end, I promise.

  1. Oh I loved your inspiration Shauna! I would incorporate a little of each of those in my powder room of dreams. Yours is going to look gorgeous, you’ve got a blank slate to work with and you are so talented – I’m looking forward to seeing what you do!

  2. I am of no use when it comes to this, I have no decor ideas at all… good luck I’m sure you will come up with something

  3. Can’t wait to see the progress. So fun to start with a blank slate. Good luck with scraping the ceiling!
