Our Basement Renovation {Part One}

I’ve been finalizing the plans for our basement renovation. Read about the space we want to create, including basements I’m using as inspiration.

When we purchased our home 8 years ago, it was an unfinished space and didn’t have any intention of doing much with it. Over the years, it has mainly been a storage space, area to tackle messy projects, somewhere to work out and play mini sticks.

As our son has grown, the need for more room in our home has increased. When we decorated our upstairs family room about 6 years ago, my son and his friends were small. Fast forward 6 years, and we now have 16 and 17 year old ‘men’ walking around the house. The noise that comes with them is astonishing!

Finishing the basement (or at least part of it) seems like the right solution. I don’t know about you, but as a teenager I loved having friends over to watch movies and hang out. For us, sleepovers were the best.

Over the years, the main room at the bottom of our stairs has become somewhat of a hangout anyway. As new furniture was purchased for other parts of our home, the old stuff made its way to the basement. Currently there’s an old TV, cabinet, floor pillows, lamp, side table and a large area rug. It has all served a purpose, but it’s time to create a proper hangout space.

Throughout the renovation in the coming weeks, I’ll be documenting the entire process. Topics will range anywhere from selecting doors and trim, to paint colors, flooring, furniture and decor. I know it’s going to require a lot of work and decision making, but it will be worth it in the end!

Basement Family Room Ideas

Here are some lovely basement family rooms I have found as a source of inspiration. I love how stylish, yet comfortable they look.

You can also find more ideas on my Basement Board on Pinterest.

There are certain elements I like from each of these rooms and will be incorporating them into our basement design. Ultimately we want it to be a warm and cozy space to watch movies and sports, host the occasional get together, as well as a place for my son to hang out with his friends.

Do you have a space in your home that’s perfect for hanging out? Do you have any suggestions for creating a teenager proof space? I’d love your input!

  1. We’re just in the process of de-cluttering so that we can start a plan for our basement too. I can’t wrap my mind around how it’s going to work until we get rid of all this stuff!
