House Proud?

Do you have those days when you look around and all you see is the stuff you don’t like about your home? You forget about the beautiful pillows you have on your sofa or the collection of gorgeous black and white photos grouped on a wall in your family room. Instead, your eyes bypass the good and only notice the scuffs on the wall, the wood trim you’ve wanted to paint out since the day you moved in, and the flooring that really just needs to be ripped out.

Yesterday I had one of those days and it seemed to hit me really hard. Perhaps it was the dump of snow that made me realize I’ll be spending way more time indoors and my yard will no longer serve as visual eye candy. Maybe it was a glass-half-empty day where I’m bracing myself for the cold weather and shorter days.

It’s also possible my Nate Berkus for Target post got me thinking about whether or not I was house proud. You can call it whatever you want, but the truth is that there are some projects I’ve put off far too long that need to become a priority.

So, where do I start? Today I’m making a list of all the projects (big and small) that must be done over the next 6 months. I’m giving myself this time frame because I know when the warm weather arrives, I’ll want to spend as much time outside as possible.

To come up with a solid plan, I’m going to follow the steps I wrote about previously on getting you and your home speaking the same language. Apparently I was feeling the same way on almost the same day one year ago (check the date of the post)!

Are you feeling good about your house right now or a little on the negative side? What projects do you plan on tackling that can no longer fly under the radar?

Enjoy your day!

  1. We rent our home, and most of the time I’m not only good with that, but relieved. Not because I don’t want to own, but because my husband’s career will ultimately weight the logistics of that commitment, and we’re not quite ready, not quite ‘there’ yet. But… I am struggling right now with wanting to do more, take things to another level, invest in those bigger picture pieces, and it’s interesting that the timing is so smilar to yours! I need to kickstart the creativity and kick out the half empty glass that feels like a roadblock. Thank you for this jolt of inspiration!

    1. I’m glad I’m not alone in feeling this way right now. Today I’m looking at things a little more positively, but it doesn’t change my plans of rolling my sleeves up and going for it.

  2. Shauna, you are not alone. I know I have areas in my house I’d love to change or update. I also need to make a list, so I can keep focused and have the satisfaction of crossing a project off the list after it is completed. Otherwise, I feel overwhelmed and don’t even know where to begin. It is comforting to know you also have the same feelings! Thanks for sharing! :)

  3. I truly love my home, however, it has been a little neglected. I think sometimes I focus on “the pretty” and ignore the day to day. I would much rather rearrange furniture or redo a couple of lamps than get around to finishing off the baseboards…(installed 4 years ago and I still havent filled & caulked them!)
It’s easy to put off, I have never done it before! What if I make a mess, but I think I need to suck it up and get going…wanna come help? Lol

  4. Oh yes, I understand! The things that need to be done in my house are not fun things (sanding & repainting every 90 year old door) and semi finishing my ugly basement.. The basement costs $$ but the doors just take commitment and I might just  join you Shauna in finally getting this done!
