DIY Outdoor Bar Cart

Almost since the day we moved into this house, I’ve wanted an outdoor bar cart. Summer is when we entertain the most and, between the food, drinks and serve ware, we never seem to have enough storage room.

Bar carts take up very little space, can be wheeled around with little effort, and their stacked surfaces mean double the capacity. And they’re just so darn fun to look at too!

Being from Canada, our summers are gorgeous, but they’re way too short. I simply cannot justify spending a bunch of money on outdoor furniture when it sits in storage more than half the year.

So, whenever I come across items at Value Village that can be repurposed as outdoor furniture, I jump at the chance.

Most people in their right mind walk right past secondhand IKEA change tables at the thrift shop. Not me. I snagged one right away.

(That could start some good rumours, right? A little something to get the neighbours talking!)

I saw the makings of a DIY IKEA bar cart. See the two levels with a tray-like surface? Simply cut off the legs, add some casters and spray paint the whole thing white.

  1. Love it! I’m drooling over the door in the background – and really kicking myself. I was at Chintz and Co last week helping a girlfriend furnish her new place and out back they had two old (yuckily painted) doors that were free!! And I left them!! GRRRR

    1. Darn. I used to do that all the time until my husband said you can always take it back or give it away. My basement storage room is pretty much at capacity, though, so I need to be mindful for sure!

  2. What a great idea – good eye! I’m sure you’ll get a lot of use out of that this summer!

  3. Why yes, this is FUN, double right! I LOVE your bar cart Shauna, and what a fantastic idea. I would have loved seeing you tuck the change table into your car ;-) And yes, I’ll be there at 5 on the dot – how does tomorrow sound? Cheers, clink-clink!!

  4. Love this idea! When summer only last a few months in Alberta (when we’re lucky!!) it’s hard to justify spending so much on out door furniture. I am definitely going second hand furniture shopping this weekend to search for some pre-loved ikea gems. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Beautiful Shauna! I love that you added the bottle opener. Key to any summer entertaining :) Today is perfect weather to enjoy that bar cart :)

  6. I recently redid an old changing table and gifted it as a bar cart to my son for his new apt. He loves it!
    A great way to recycle!

    1. Thanks, Samantha! Yes, let’s repurpose them so they stay out of landfills. Handy, since you’re more apt to have a drink or two when baby doesn’t need the change table anymore. Win-win!
