First Home Project Plans for 2014

Have big home project plans for 2014? See what’s on our home improvement list!

As mentioned last week, I’ve been working behind the scenes on the blog to bring everything up to date and clear out anything that no longer serves a purpose. It seems like every facet of our lives needs a re-working some time or another, doesn’t it?

My birthday is this week (it’s a biggie), and I find myself thinking about what I want to leave behind as I enter a new decade, as well as what has been serving me well and will be carried forward. Getting rid of the old tends to make room for something new and, in my experience, it’s usually a better fit.

As I reflect on my personal changes, I can’t help but think about those I also want to make to our home. Have you ever entered a room and thought, “I really despise that!” It happened to me just the other day when I looked at our kitchen curtains. What worked ten years ago isn’t working now (am I surprised?). It’s time to look at our home with a fresh set of eyes and make some changes bit by bit.

Although we have big renovation plans over the next two years, we’ve decided to start with the smaller projects for now. Our laundry room, powder room and front entryway are all connected (see our main level floor plan below in mirror image to show how our house was built). That’s where the focus will be for the first part of 2014.

Our House Plan - Main Floor

Our plan is to update each space from builder-boring to better reflect our style preferences.

I’ve already purchased some new bath hardware in polished chrome to replace the towel bar and tissue holder in the powder room.

We’re also adding a new glass shelf (a small part of what we’re going to do, but these details can make or break a room). Other updates will be replacing the linoleum with tile, painting, adding a new light fixture and some accessories.

As many of you know, we had plans to start our entryway renovation last year, but unexpected travel for my husband’s work meant putting everything on hold. Then spring and summer hit and we turned our attention to our son’s graduation and outdoor projects– you know how it goes…

Now, we’re putting it on the top of our to-do list! The design plan I created for the space last April will remain the same (as with any project, there will likely be small changes along the way).

Our laundry room will basically carry on the same look as the entryway and powder room. The main change will be adding a countertop over the washer and dryer, as well as some additional storage.

I’ll be sharing updates on each of these projects as we get to them. I’m crossing my fingers everything goes as planned (i.e. not too much unexpected work travel, product backorders, waiting on installers, etc.) and we have it wrapped up before the warm weather hits. (P.S. Don’t expect to see anything right away. My husband has planned a surprise destination birthday getaway– so exciting!)

What are your home project plans (big or small) for this year? What tends to throw a wrench in your home improvement plans?

Enjoy your day!

  1. I love coming to your blog, Shauna! I always get such a boost of inspiration, and in this case it’s the cleaning out that has spoken to me! I’m looking at our home with a fresh set of eyes, and my blog too. I have lots of work to do on the blog, and have already begun the homefront purge! Good luck – your reno is going to be gorgeous, I can already tell!!

  2. I feel the same way this time of year & so do my clients I guess.. The phone keeps ringing which leaves no time for me..
Looking forward to seeing your projects and hey, enjoy your birthday Shauna!

  3. I couldn’t agree more about clearing out the old and making room for the new, in life and in our homes.  There’s something about that big birthday that gives us the courage to make those decisions.   A destination getaway…how exciting!

I can’t wait to watch your designs become reality…I’m in LOVE with that shade of turquoise you have picked out for the foyer.
