Designer Challenge: Which Headboard? {Part Two}

Welcome to Part Two of the Designer Challenge- headboard edition! I’m thrilled to welcome Brooke of Brooklyn Berry Designs. Although Brooke and I live in the same neck of the woods, we haven’t met in person, but I can tell we’d have a lot to talk about over coffee (on my list for the new year!). Brooke’s blog is an online journal where she shares ideas and inspiration for creating a safe, warm and welcoming place, as well as dishing out her take on books (also know as her “me” time away from the kids). I can’t wait for you to see what she came up with! (If you missed Part One, you can find out what the headboard options were and what Rita did here.)

I’m Brooke, an Interior Designer and mom to 3 boys, including a set of crazy twins. I love a good challenge, whether it be a small budget or a quirky architectural feature, because it always creates a unique solution.

For Shauna’s designer challenge, I decided to take a step out of my comfort zone and design around the headboard that was beautiful, but made me nervous. I figured since this was just for fun, I could venture out of my comfort zone. It was really fun!

Designer Challenge: Which Headboard? {Part One}

It’s been a while since we’ve had a Designer Challenge, and I’m excited to bring you another installment of this popular series. This time I presented three headboard options and asked each designer to select her favorite and tell us what she’d do with it. First up, I’m happy to introduce Rita from Harbour Breeze. Rita and I connected through a Canadian designer group we’re both part of. After checking out her blog, I was so impressed by her $159 kitchen makeover, as well as other amazing projects, I immediately knew she was perfect for this challenge.

Hi everyone. I’m Rita Joy and am thrilled to be sharing over here at Shauna’s place today. My blog home address is found at Harbour Breeze and my real address is on an island in beautiful British Columbia. I share my old, history filled house with my husband and 3 boys ~ one of which is already graduated and moved on. I love the challenge and charm an old house brings and have been enjoying working on our home one room at a time.

Shauna’s designer challenge has been so much fun! She presented these three headboards and asked me to pick one and design a room around it.

1. The Alta Headboard by Serena & Lily

2. Scrolled and Tufted Headboard found at Decorator Tag Sale

3. Pavillion Headboard by Zinc Door

I chose the Alta Headboard by Serena & Lily. I loved the classic look with the nail head detail and couldn’t get over the huge choice of beautiful fabrics and patterns. I set out to design a bedroom that I would love if finances weren’t any issue. Oh, what fun that is! My dream bedroom would be classic, warm, and rustic ~ with just a little bit of bling. Since I really love the idea of having my dream bedroom situated where I could see the ocean waves out its spacious windows, I’m calling this one “Beach Cottage Bling”.

Client Bedroom Design for Small Space Living

I recently completed a bedroom design plan for a young couple living in the city. As often is the case with condos, this space was tight and had bulkheads, columns and heating vents running all over. Storage was also a major concern. After meeting with Tanja and seeing the space, I could see why she was having difficulty putting a furniture and decorating plan together given all of the challenges.

These are a few of the requirements she gave me:

  • Neutral scheme with some pops of bold color
  • Serene, somewhat modern, with a nod to vintage
  • Considerations for resale within the next few years
  • Budget-friendly

Styling a Bed

How was your weekend? We were bombarded with rain, so all outside projects were put on hold until it dries up a bit. However, it did allow me to focus on organizing my office for a while and I’m getting close to having it just the way I want it. Those of you who have been asking about my office closet makeover, I promise you will see the after photos soon. Between our basement renovation, the Outdoor Extravaganza and wrapping up client projects before summer holidays, that particular project took a back seat. I’m sure some of you can relate!

A while back, I stumbled upon a clever visual on Pinterest for arranging pillows on a bed. After tracking down the source, I discovered that Marissa from Marissa Waddell Interiors and Roost was the creator and I asked if she would share some tips for styling a bed. Thankfully she agreed, so here goes…

One of my favorite decorating duties is to pick out and arrange pillows. There are literally a million ways to style pillows on a bed! I made this little cheat sheet of my 10 favorite ways… but how do I decide which one to use? That decision process is usually three steps for me:

1. How big is the bed?
King-size beds usually require arrangements with two or three big Euro pillows. Queen-size beds can handle standard or Euro arrangements. Most of these arrangements work for twin-size beds, too– just half the number of pillows (round down for odd numbers). [Read more...]

Designer Challenge: Which Area Rug? {Part Two}

Welcome to Part Two of the Designer Area Rug Challenge! I’m thrilled to welcome Leah of The Way We Are. I love Leah’s blog for the way her personality shines through, as well as the eclectic mix of decorating styles, ideas and wonderful inspiration she provides. I can’t wait for you to see what she did! (If you missed Part One, you can see the three area rug options and find out what Amanda did here.)

Hello Satori readers! I’m Leah from The Way We Are, and let me start off by saying thank you to Shauna for asking me to take part in this amazing series! I am really honored that you asked me to be included!

I love daydreaming of what I would do with a certain item so this was super fun for me. I chose this rug from Dash and Albert mostly because I LOVE it and I also think it would be really easy to work with. The colors are a calm and cool combo and I always like that vibe in any space.

Teen Room Refresh {before}

After going through my son’s room with him last weekend (you can read about it here), it left his shelves looking bare in some spots and messy in others, making a few required changes apparent. Although we designed his room with longevity in mind, it has been over four years since we’ve made any noteworthy changes (except for bedding, a new lamp and the small stuff that has crept in). He has always been a huge sports fan and, although I wouldn’t call his room theme-y, it definitely has that vibe. Most boys and even men never seem to outgrow that style. Ages 12 and 16 (almost 17) are miles apart and it was time (perhaps long over due) to pack up the Build a Bear, piggy bank and other juvenile looking stuff. (This is where you jump in and give me a hug!)

Planning ahead those 4 or so years ago really paid off. Aside from removing small items from his shelves (and the whack of clothes and other stuff from his closet), his furniture is still suitable for a teen/young adult. At almost 6’3″ he could probably use a longer bed, but his room is too small to accommodate one (sorry bud). I’ve designed quite a few kid’s rooms and I always encourage my clients to purchase furniture that will grow with the child. Artwork and accessories are much easier to replace than beds, night stands and desks. With that being said, the changes we need to make are minor.

Here’s what we’re starting with:
