Lemon Poppyseed Biscotti + Microplane Giveaway!

Thank you to Microplane for sponsoring today’s post and helping me share one of our favorite cookie recipes.  As always, opinions are 100% my own.

Do you like baking? Now that my son is away at college, I don’t do near as much as I used to. A treat for me is eating dates and nuts or a square of dark chocolate. Occasionally, I crave something with a bit of crunch to pair with an afternoon cup of coffee or tea. Biscotti is that satisfying indulgence, and this lemon poppyseed recipe is a little friendlier to the waistline when compared to most cookies too.

This is the time of year when I turn into a lemon fanatic. I’m not sure if it has to do with the cheery bright yellow color or my body simply craving more vitamin C from the effects of winter. To me, recipes with citrus are fresh and vibrant, kind of like spring!

Lemon Poppyseed Biscotti

1 cup all-purpose flour (I used nutri-flour “tastes like white” blend)
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 ½ tsp. baking powder
1 TB. poppyseeds
¼ tsp. sea salt
1/3 cup sugar (evaporated cane juice)
1/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar
2 eggs + 1 egg white
2 TB. butter, softened
1 ½ TB. grated lemon zest
1 TB. freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tsp. vanilla
½ cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, poppyseeds and salt. In a separate bowl, beat together both sugars and butter, adding the eggs, lemon zest, lemon juice and vanilla. Mix well.

Vintage Key Art + Pot of Gold Giveaway!

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and although we typically don’t do much around here to celebrate the Irish tradition, I thought it would be fun to join a group of other Canadian bloggers in hosting a “Pot of Gold” giveaway! I’m sure you’d love to get your hands on $300 worth of Paypal cash! (More on that in a bit.)

In the spirit of today’s giveaway, each of us were asked by Tara from Suburble to create something gold. Of course, I went to my old stand by, liquid gilding, as it hasn’t let me down yet! (Take a look at my gold gilded bird art and inspiration pin board to see what I’m talking about.)

This vintage key art project is super easy and will definitely add a bit of sparkle to your space.

Lightly sand your shadow box frame and tape off glass portion with painter’s tape. Apply a coat of gold liquid gilding to entire box (inside and out) except for the back (which will be covered with paper).

Once it’s dry (overnight is best), cut the paper the same size as the back and hold in place with glue or magnets (depending on if your shadow box backing is magnetized or not). Attach the vintage keys with magnets or glue. That’s it!

It’s been way too long since my last Etsy shop feature and I’m excited to get the ball rolling again! Whether you’re looking for a customized baby gift, a memorable birth announcement or an invitation that will surely get noticed, I’m certain you’ll want to check out  The Village Press.

Who’s Behind The Village Press?

Frances- The Village Press

Frances Karulas is a web and graphic designer living and working out of Toronto. She caught the programming bug while taking an elective course en route to a biology degree at the University of Toronto. That single class led to switching majors from bio to computer science and so an IT geek was born!

Since then she’s worked a variety of programming jobs- from gigs at two of Canada’s largest banks, to interesting freelance jobs with some of Toronto’s top musicians and authors. Along the way has also developed a keen interest in graphic design. While web programming jobs can often be more technical than creative, working on graphic design projects allows Frances to really cultivate her artistic side. This combination of technology and imagination has helped build a very challenging and rewarding business.

In her free time (which I’m sure there is little of!), Frances also blogs about the adventures of her amazing two year old daughter Alexandra at 52newthings. Her web portfolio can be seen at Vaionet Media, while her graphic design work can be seen showcased in her Etsy shop The Village Press.

Time to Refresh Your Nest! {Satori’s Blogiversary Giveaway}

Hello all! This week marks two years of blogging, as well as five years of business. Although it has required a lot of hard work, determination and focus to get here, I’m thankful everyday that I had the courage (and probably enough naivety) to follow my passion and create something that’s so rewarding! A friend of mine recently asked why I love blogging so much and I think it mainly has to do with the connections I’ve formed with all of you, in addition to being an outlet for sharing my creativity, as well as that of others. Everything else is icing on the cake.

Satori's 2nd Blogiversary Event- Rainbow Rosette Celebration Cake

Did I just say cake? In true party fashion there should be cake for everyone (like this beautiful rainbow rosette cake), but that’s a little tricky. Instead, I’ve decided to give you the chance to win a Refresh Your Nest prize pack.
